RubberDuck recommends that you use Stabond two piece PVC glue for major fixes. Glue provided in repair kit will work on minor patches.
1. Atmosphere: Temperature must be between 64 and 77F, humidity level less than 70%
2. Preparation. Its best to have everything ready before starting procedure. Gather rags, glue brush, solvent, timer with a second hand or stopwatch. Make sure surface is clean and dry. Tape off area appropriately. Get patch cut out and position noted and marked.
3. Mix accelerator and glue thoroughly either now or before or while waiting between your solvent wipes (explained below). Caution* accelerator is toxic; keep off skin. Keep recently mixed glue covered when not using.
4. Solvent Cleaning (repeat 3 times). Make sure to rub both sides with MEK(Methyl Ethyl Ketone) on a rag to the clean surface. Be careful not to wipe the MEK on areas of the boat or patch that will be seen as MEK will make the fabric sticky and shiny. Masking tape around the perimeter will minimize this. wait 5 minutes after the first MEK wash.
5. Apply two more solvent wipes with 5 minutes waiting time.
6. Glue Application. Using the stiff brush apply a thin layer to both sides. Aggressively work it into the PVC. Make sure it doesn’t look to thick.
7. Wait 5 minutes (time it) or until glue appears dried.
8. Repeat steps 6 & 7 till you have 3 layers. After third layer wait 10 minutes.
9. Join the surfaces during the next 10 minutes. Start from one edge and slowly lay the patch or accessory down onto the glued area.
10. Make sure to press out all air bubbles and wrinkles from the centre to the edges. Make sure to rub as hard as possible with a smoothing tool. For davits and hard based accessories, deflate boat and press through from the other side to make sure of adhesion. Wipe off excess glue with a solvent.
11. Wait at least 48 hours before use. Chemical bonding will continue to strengthen over next 7 days. Don’t be tempted to shorten the process.
12. To pressure test, blow up to full pressure and leave overnight.
